We have had the pleasure of interviewing him and this has been the result.
Can you tell us a little about your experience? Where are you from/how did you get into music? How did you learn to produce?
Where do we start…? We both live in different cities, Andreas in Berlin and Daniel in Rostock at the Baltic Sea. It all started in the 90s when we started DJing and experimenting with music production. Basically, we taught ourselves everything as there wasn’t much of an internet connection back then… No tutorials, no books, just trying and failing. In 2001 we got to know each other on a techno forum on the internet. We immediately bonded through our shared passion for electronic music and founded a record label together not long after, Voltage Musique Records. In 2006 we started producing music together and decided to join forces as The Glitz.
Who have been your main inspirations (both musically and in “life”)? And how have they affected your sound?
Daniel: For me, it’s definitely a political spirit that resonates a lot in the music of the 70-90s. This is an important aspect to me and I see myself as quite politically active. Musically, there are so many great artists who have inspired me and continue to inspire me. Massive Attack, Aphex Twin, Four Tet, the list goes on.
Andreas: I’ve had a wide range of musical inspiration over the years, ranging from Death Metal in my early youth to the wild electronic music of the 90s and more experimental styles in between. The early days of the Love Parade in Berlin and Time Warp Mannheim in the early 2000s had a massive impact on me. Thunderdome, Carl Cox, Westbam, Chris Liebing from the early 2000s and Techno record labels like “Intec” or „Bush“ hugely influenced my electronic music beginnings.
How would you define your sound? And how has your sound evolved in the album?
We are very open when we work in the studio. Although one could say that we’ve committed ourselves to club music, you can expect almost anything from us. From wild downbeat to techno bangers, we love it all. Our own style comes naturally when we work together, through our different influences we create a dynamic balance and fun flow in the productions. And this is exactly what you’ll find on the album. We’ve just added a pinch of pop attitude to our style.
What can you tell us about your latest album? What inspired you? What do you want to transmit?
It was important for us to take the next steps. To develop further and dare to try new things we had always wanted to try. Of course, Mulay also made a major contribution with her great voice. When we worked on the album we drew inspiration from productions by Moderat, FKA Twigs and Mulay herself. Haha… It was important to us to convey a certain feeling or a message in the music and we also allowed ourselves to be direct and political….Dicktator!
Do you feel like the underground scene will continue to persist?
Daniel: I think the underground scene will always exist. As so often in the history of music, one part will split off and remain truly underground and the other part will go commercial. That’s basically already happening. Electronic music has never been as present as it is now in the moment. But a lot of it has nothing to do with the original spirit. It’s a lot about money. Agencies and social media determine the business. The music seems secondary.
What projects are you working on right now?
We are currently working on our live setup to play the album live at selected venues. Our first live concert together with Mulay will be in Hamburg June 13th. We also want to make some more edits and remixes of the album tracks. We released a lot of singles ahead of the album and made some proper club versions of some of them. It was really fun to work with the album material in a club oriented way, so we want to do this for a couple of more tracks… And there are a bunch of remix requests that want to be worked on ;)
