Hi Cyazon, how are you? Congratulations on the release of ‘Nexus’!
Hello, doing good and thank you!
To start, can you tell us about the production process of this new track? What did your workflow look like?
So, I made this track around 2021. The track went through many different versions so the process took a while to finalize the track. From my memory, I remember working not the intro first up until the chorus, and then finishing the rest of the track. I sent it out to a vocalist to record vocals for it. I then re-did the drops/choruses with new bass sounds and a new arrangement.
If someone hadn’t heard the track, how would you describe its sound?
Melodic, dreamy, and heavy-sounding.
How would you say your recent releases showcase your evolution as a Producer?
A lot of my recent releases are music I have made a few years ago, so it is not representative of my evolution as an artist. But a lot of my unreleased music has this analog, 80s, synthwave, and cinematic kind of sound, while still being within the Electronic music genre, so my unreleased music is very different than my recent releases.
The soundscape of ‘Nexus’ is layered with many different elements, including punchy synths, driving basslines, and pounding beats. Can you tell us how you weave together such detailed mixes whilst ensuring each element remains clear and distinct?
The main way I make sure my mixes are clear and distinct for my songs is by removing the low end from all other elements that are not a bass or kick drum by EQing. I also volume balance everything accordingly, so it will feel balanced. I make sure my kick and snare drums are a little bit louder than my basslines and synths. I make sure that the synths and basslines are at the same volume. I also use other mixing techniques by using a plugin called ‘soothe’ to get rid of any muddy frequencies in my synths and basslines.
What were some of the challenges you faced during the production of ‘Nexus’? And what did you enjoy most about your time in the studio?
The main challenge was creating the drops/choruses. The first or second iteration of the choruses did not feel as impactful as the final version of it. So, as I have mentioned before, it was a lot of trial and error with the arrangement of the basslines and creating new basslines to create a version that felt right for the final song. I enjoyed creating the melodic and dreamy atmosphere in the intro while creating ‘Nexus’.
Can you share some of your production secrets? What are some of your go-to techniques that you use within all of your tracks?
One of the main production secrets I can share is that I started using Arturia Analog Lab V since last year. It has been a game changer for me for finding unique and interesting sounding melodic synth elements, as well as heavy and unique basslines too. I have been able to really craft a sound that is unique to me, and I believe using this plugin helped evolve my sound tremendously. That’s all I can really think of at the moment. One go-to technique I can share is that I use Valhalla VintageVerb a lot on my synths. That is how I’m able to get all of my synth elements to feel atmospheric and spacious with reverb, while giving them a distinct sound that feels like the synths are from the same space.
‘Nexus’ builds in energy, delivering atmospheric and powerful moments. Can you tell us about your process when it comes to structuring and arranging your tracks? How do you ensure listeners remain engaged?
Most of the time I start with creating the intro leading up to the chorus. That’s how I’m usually able to tell how I’m going to structure and arrange the tracks, is from starting from the beginning of the track. I start with creating melodies first and all of the melodic elements such as pads, synth leads, synth arppegiators, etc. Then I add the basslines for the intro next and all of the effects. I then go to the drop and use bigger basslines and synths for the choruses. So, in summary that is the best way I can describe how I structure and arrange my tracks. I ensure my listeners remain engaged by creating a memorable synth lead melody that remains consistent throughout the whole track.
When creating a track, do you usually approach the production process with a goal or specific inspiration in mind?
Most of the time when creating a track, I produce with a feeling or story that I want to tell so it is more inspiration-based.
What can fans expect to see next from you?
For right now, I plan on one song release every month.
