Having only started producing and recording music in recent years, this talented Artist is already on an exciting path, developing and evolving her sound to encompass her wide range of influences, Lorna James’ passion and enthusiasm for music, along with her original creativity, solidify her as one to watch within the genre.
We sat down with Lorna James to discuss her background, musical journey, and the story behind her evolution as an Artist.
Can you remember your earliest musical memory?
My earliest musical memory was playing my parents’ piano when I was two years old.
What was the first album you bought?
This is super-embarrassing; I bought one of the ‘Now that’s what I call music’ compilations, which were full of contemporaneous pop hits. I still maintain that there were some pretty good songs in amongst the noise though!
Name 3 of the most inspirational artists to you.
My inspiration comes from a wide variety of music so I’m going with Chicane, Bruce Hornsby, and Vaughn Williams!
When did you first start making music? And how did you then move into producing Electronic Music?
I began writing my own music when I was about six or seven years old. I remember making a truly awful Christmas carol for a competition (which, quite rightly, I didn’t win). I’ve written classical piano pieces pretty much ever since, but I’ve always loved dance music too. In 2022, I decided to start experimenting with putting Classical and House music together.
What was the name of the first track you ever produced?
“Dance Would Be A Fine Thing”, which was released by Subsume Records in early 2022. It’s a hat tip to the early 1990s, about 120 BPM, lots of Acid House vibes, and a stabby piano riff.
How would you say your sound has evolved as you’ve grown as an Artist?
I’ve definitely become much more confident in mixing genres; I used to keep my Classical influences separate from my ethereal/cinematic tracks, and Dance tracks separate from both. As I have progressed, you can hear influences from all three genres in my Dance tracks.
Can you tell us about some of the highlights of your career so far?
It’s always great to watch a dancefloor respond positively to your track; almost nothing better. I was one of three finalists in the UK Songwriting Competition 2023 in the EDM category, which was a huge honour. But honestly, the best bit about writing music is hearing about how it makes people feel. If someone tells me that one of my tracks has stirred a positive emotion in the listener, that’s the greatest highlight of all!
What goals do you hope to achieve next?
I’m working on a Dance album at the moment, and I’d love to see great traction from some of the singles I’m releasing from it.
Have you received any advice during your career which remains important to you today?
“The rules are there to be broken.”
Finally, what continues to drive and motivate you to produce music?
I write about a track a week and I’m on a mission to create the best music I possibly can; to make each one better than the last. And of course, if I didn’t absolutely love creating new music with a burning passion, I wouldn’t do it at all!
