Philip Lawns presents Virginia

Some electronic records document places. Others capture moments in time. Virginia, Philip Lawns’ latest EP for THISBE Recordings, somehow manages to do both. While his 2022 album Ten Years of Travel was inspired by Odysseus’ mythical voyage across the Aegean Sea, this new release turns its gaze toward an adventure that is infinitely more personal: becoming a father. The mythology is gone, replaced by sleepless nights, quiet revelations and the profound emotional shift that accompanies new life. Yet the sense of discovery remains exactly the same.
What makes Lawns particularly compelling is his refusal to translate autobiography into sentimentality. Instead of composing obvious musical diary entries, he filters experience through the language he has spent years refining: cosmic disco, cinematic electronics and warm analogue textures that feel simultaneously nostalgic and forward-looking. His productions have always suggested movement, but here that movement feels less geographical than emotional. The destination isn’t a mythical island anymore—it is a new version of oneself.
The title track, “Virginia,” unfolds with remarkable restraint. Rather than rushing toward a dramatic payoff, it gradually builds an atmosphere where every synthesizer line feels carefully positioned within a spacious arrangement. The melody arrives almost unnoticed before quietly establishing itself as the emotional center of the composition. It possesses the rare quality of sounding instantly memorable without relying on predictable hooks, balancing melancholy and optimism with extraordinary elegance. The result is a piece that functions equally well as an intimate home listening experience or as one of those sunrise moments capable of transforming an entire dancefloor.
On the B-side, “Disko Randagio” reveals another side of Lawns’ musical personality. Here, rhythm takes center stage. Elastic basslines, shimmering synths and gently propulsive percussion combine into a groove that feels unmistakably rooted in the traditions of Italo disco while avoiding the trap of simple revivalism. Rather than recreating the past, Lawns extracts its emotional vocabulary and rewrites it using contemporary production techniques. The track carries the effortless confidence of music that understands exactly where it belongs—somewhere between Mediterranean warmth and cosmic escapism.

The remix package extends that universe without diluting its identity. Amarcord approaches “Virginia” through the lens of electro and modern new wave, sharpening its melodic contours while preserving its emotional depth. Naobum chooses a more hypnotic route, transforming the original into an immersive late-night meditation built around slowly evolving textures. Meanwhile, CCorrado injects “Disko Randagio” with distinctly Sicilian house energy, amplifying its dancefloor appeal without sacrificing its elegance, before THISBE founder Pyrame delivers the EP’s most expansive reinterpretation, stretching the material into an epic, widescreen club journey.
What ultimately distinguishes Virginia is its remarkable balance between intimacy and universality. Lawns never asks listeners to experience his personal story directly. Instead, he creates enough emotional openness for everyone to project their own memories and transformations onto these compositions. In an electronic landscape often driven by concepts louder than the music itself, Virginia reminds us that genuine emotional resonance rarely needs explanation. Sometimes, a melody says everything.
