The nights of Africa’s major cities pulse to the electronic sounds produced across the continent, from Angolan kuduro and South African amapiano to Nigeria’s thriving scene and the many other strands of house music that have since taken the world by storm.
Born in the streets of Bobo-Dioulasso, Kananayé had already won over dancers losing themselves in the energy of its live shows. Carried by the voice of Clotilde Rullaud Nacoulma, its songs build towards a state of trance, propelled by a line-up of virtuoso musicians and formidable rhythm-makers: Abdoulaye “Debademba” Traoré on guitar, Achille Nacoulma on drums, Seydou “Kanazoé” Diabaté on balafon and Boubacar “Papa” Djiga on kundé.
Now, Kananayé makes the leap from concert stage to dancefloor, entrusting four songs steeped in West African traditions and poetry to some of the continent’s most exciting electronic producers for the Kananayé Remix EP.
Zimbabwean producer Murphy Cubic recasts Cimetre through an Afro House lens. Mo Laudi, a key figure in the international rise of South Africa’s electronic scene, takes on the traditional American song Sea Lion Woman, famously interpreted by Nina Simone. Kenya’s Kayrop fuses balafon with atmospheric techno on Teri Djougou, while DJ RMBO, known as a member of South African band BLK JKS, propels Garibou onto the dancefloors of Johannesburg.
With this remix EP, Kananayé shows that roots are not anchors holding us in the past, but a source of energy for inhabiting the present and imagining the future.
