GusGus bring you their thrilling new single If I Walk Away, the first from their album Rewind & Replay out in Spring 2027, next year also marking the 30th Anniversary of their breakthrough album Polydistortion.
Tracing their origins back to an early 90s short film, whose need for music unlocked an enduring collaboration between Icelandic pop star Daníel Haraldsson and electronic producer Biggi Veira (T-World), GusGus have continued in a wonderfully experimental and completely spontaneous fashion ever since. Since 2020, GusGus have been joined by Margrét Rán Magnúsdóttir – an Icelandic composer and singer who has gone from being influenced by the band as a teen to now inspiring its future.
With the likes of Emilíana Torrini, Hafdís Huld, Ian Brown, John Grant, Depeche Mode and Björk as collaborators, GusGus’ varied membership has produced dazzling and varied, yet strikingly coherent results in their journey through electronic music.
If I Walk Away opens with sweeping rave-anthemic synths and Margrét Rán Magnúsdóttir’s emotive vocals, blending atmospheric textures with the euphoric energy of the dancefloor.
If I walk away / I would not hold you in my arms again.
A tether to your name / Or would you beg me, make me stay?
From here, If I Walk Away breaks into a full-scale rave. Are you moving already? Your hands are surely in the air. A thwacking drum line and a lush bass synth are joined by a sumptuous interplay between Birnir, one of Iceland’s most successful hip-hop artists, and Margrét’s vocals, before a breakbeat joins the party, glitchy synth creatures flying like ice demons through the æther. This is a cinematic soundscape, crisp, sharp and dripping with emotion. This is the kind of music your ears have been longing to hear again.
Biggi tells us more: “If I Walk Away has a definite ‘90s rave feel. A time when music felt more exciting and less predictable. More weird, with fewer constraints. Escapism.”
If you love If I Walk Away, stay tuned for the breathtaking album, Rewind & Replay out in Spring 2027, with a tour announcement to follow. GusGus are an incredible
