Electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk are set to revisit their iconic soundscape through a special series of concerts celebrating the golden anniversary of their seminal 1974 album, “Autobahn.” The band will take over the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown Los Angeles for a ten-day residency from May 21 to May 30.
Throughout the residency, each concert will feature live performances of a different album from Kraftwerk’s influential catalog. The series will begin on May 21 with a tribute to “Autobahn,” the album that marked their international breakthrough. Following this, each night will focus on sequential albums: “Radio-Activity” (1975) on May 22, “Trans Europe Express” (1977) on May 23, “The Man-Machine” (1978) on May 24, “Computer World” (1981) on May 25, “Techno Pop” (1986) on May 26, “The Mix” (1991) on May 28, and “Tour de France” (2003) on May 29. The residency will conclude on May 30 with a grand finale featuring a medley of tracks across their vast discography.
This event mirrors a previous celebration held for “Autobahn’s” 40th anniversary in 2014, also at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, underscoring the long-standing relationship between the venue and the band.
“Autobahn” was not just Kraftwerk’s fourth studio album; it was a groundbreaking release that expanded the band’s lineup with the addition of Klaus Röder and Wolfgang Flür to founders Ralf Hütter and the late Florian Schneider. Despite a lukewarm reception in their native West Germany, the album found a significant audience in the United States, catalyzed by its airplay on a Chicago radio station.
Over the past five decades, Kraftwerk has garnered extensive praise for their profound impact on diverse music genres including pop, hip-hop, and dance. Despite numerous changes in lineup—with Ralf Hütter remaining from the original duo—the band has continued to innovate and inspire. Joining Hütter on stage for this landmark residency are current members Henning Schmitz, Falk Grieffenhagen, and Georg Bongartz.
