The resurrection of Electrique Music in 2024 marks an exciting return to the forefront of the music scene, especially within the mex-tech realm. Under Mijo’s leadership, this legendary label has played a crucial role in promoting Mexican artists, offering a vital platform for those whose music was destined to shine but was given a proper home.
The latest release, “Workout Buddy”, by New York duo MAXIMUM FLAVOUR, perfectly embodies the essence and timeless energy that Electrique Music seeks to instill in its productions. With a masterful combination of aerobic elements and an unforgettable piano kick, the song promises to be an anthem for next summer, destined for rock dance floors.
We had the pleasure of speaking with the label’s founder, MIJO, about this release and other topics.
Hello Alec, it is a pleasure to have you at DVOXMAG. Well, to start the interview itself… How are you? Where are you currently living?
I’m fine thanks! I live in chaotic Mexico City.
Why did you make the decision to return to Electrique Music after so many years of hiatus? What can you tell us about this new single that you just released?
I founded Electrique with Eddie Mercury, Max Jones and Andre Vii around 2009 and the truth is that over time everyone focused on their personal projects but after taking a 5-year break we realized that it already exists again a new generation of talents that are very worth supporting and giving them a well-founded platform to publish their music.
Maximum Flavor and Axon Body are the two artists just released on the re-release and they are both new and a bit mysterious, the important thing is that they are making good music.
What can you tell us about the label and its way of working?
We always look for artists who are not very well known and who have good songs, we are not guided so much by the genre but by the energy and idiosyncrasy of the songs. They range from house to disco through proto techno and darker waves. The selection is very sensitive rather than commercial.
What would you say have been the best EM releases or your favorites?
I love the releases of Moon Runner and Los Mekanikos for example. There’s also one from Alien Alien that was very interesting because the remix ended up in a movie or something like that and no one told us about it.
Let’s get geeky, what instruments do you usually use in the studio? What is your favorite synthesizer? What criteria do you use when producing your own songs?
I use the Minilogue
My personal criteria has always been to think like a rock band, since I come from that background. Have a good drum set, a good bass element, a good element of surprise and memorable vocals. It doesn’t have to be sung, it just has to connect with the audience or remind them of something about their Latin American environment.
Can you recommend any artist or artists that you have listened to lately?
Undefined Pattern, Cadena Nacional, Ulises Arrieta, Anja Moss.
And finally, what can you tell us about 2024? What’s coming up for the label… showcases, releases, etc.?
We will celebrate the label’s 15th anniversary with a Latin American tour and will continue to release everything we can to keep the scene fresh.

Hola Alec, es un placer tenerte en DVOXMAG. Bueno, para empezar la entrevista propiamente…. ¿Cómo estás? ¿Dónde estás viviendo actualmente?
Estoy bien, gracias! Vivo en la caótica Ciudad de Mexico.
¿Por qué tomaste la decisión de volver con Electrique Music después de tantos años de parate? ¿Qué nos podéis contar de este nuevo single que acaban de sacar ?
Electrique la fundé con Eddie Mercury, Max Jones y Andre Vii por ahí del 2009 y la verdad es que con el tiempo cada quien fue enfocándose en sus proyectos personales pero después de tomarnos un descanso de 5 años nos dimos cuenta de que ya existe otra vez una nueva generación de talentos que vale mucho la pena apoyar y darles una plataforma bien cimentada para publicar su música.
Maximum Flavour y Axon Body son los dos artistas que acaban de publicar en el relanzamiento y ambos son nuevos y un poco misteriosos, lo importante es que están haciendo buena música.
¿Qué nos puedes contar sobre el sello y su forma de trabajar?
Buscamos siempre artistas que no sean muy conocidos y que tengan buenos temas, no nos guíamos tanto por el genero si no por la energía y la idiosincrasia de los temas. Van desde house hasta disco pasando por proto techno y ondas más oscuras. La selección es muy de sensibilidad más que comercial.
¿Cuál dirías han sido los mejores lanzamientos de EM o tus favoritos?
Me encantan los releases de Moon Runner y Los Mekanikos por ejemplo. También hay uno de Alien Alien que fue muy interesante por que el remix terminó en una película o algo así y nadie nos avisó.
Pongámonos frikis, ¿qué instrumentos soléis utilizar en el estudio? ¿Cuál es tu sintetizador favorito? ¿Qué criterios utilizas a la hora de producir tus propios temas?
Utilizo demasiado el Minilogue XD ya que tiene un secuenciador integrado que hace que toda la experiencia sea muy poco aburrida, odio los menús y los sintes demasiado nerds, entre más se parezcan a un juguete mejor para mi.
Mi criterio personal siempre ha sido pensar como una banda de rock, ya que yo vengo de ese trasfondo. Tener una batería un buen bajo, un buen elemento sorpresa y vocal memorable. No tiene que ser cantada, solo tiene que conectar con el publico o recordarles algo de su entorno latinoamericano.
