Niilas is Peder Niilas Tårnesvik, a Bergen artist who works across club music, sound art, and performance. He has produced complete and unique conceptual albums, has a distinctive audio-visual live show, and was a big part of BICEP‘s lauded multimedia project TAKKUUK, featuring in the movie and on the album’s intro track. He has performed at major festivals like Øya, at art museums like Henie Onstad, at Tate Modern Corner Bar, and at the Munch Museum, and has soundtracked adverts for Adidas and Polestar.
‘Nama Haga’ translates to “untitled” from Northern Sám and lets Niilas’ melancholic, experimental universe shine through a lens reminiscent of his 2020 debut album. Much of the music was created between projects and while travelling, and comes with a sense of real joy, while the title is also an homage to the late multidisciplinary artist Áillohaš. The record, which features collaborations with Why Kai and Resa Saffa Park, comes with a series of music videos mostly directed and written by Lea Meyer, as well as a handful of simpler, more DIY-style videos.
‘Crossroads’ opens with melancholic pads over lean, broken beats, with sombre chords lingering in the air as percussion shimmers. ‘Nama Haga’ continues the celestial blend of cosmic keys, with Spanish guitar bringing real heat to the swirling, immersive soundscape. The majestic ‘Thank You’ is a collage of wordless expression, heavier drums, and a slow, bumping bassline that gets hips moving before ‘Can Dance’ picks up the pace with a deep, percussive, and rich house sound packed with melodic flourishes and jazzy keys. ‘Team Rokket’ is another freeform rhythmic expression and live jam with inquisitive astral leads reading for the heavens.
‘Get Out’ is a stripped-back, woody, and organic minimal groove with warming chords dancing up top, while ‘Get Up for You’ pulls back in live-sounding broken beats with pitched-up R&B vocal hooks and lush chords that inject some summer sun. ‘Jämtland ft. Why Kai’ is a star-gazing slow jam with meandering, hypotonic leads and gentle drums lulling you into a meditative state, ‘Bye Bye ft. Resa Saffa Park’ is a gorgeous lullaby with sensuous vocals and supple, soft acid lines echoing early trip hop. ‘Tirrati’ shuts down with fractured vocals and heavy-hearted drums, a reflective lament with a playful heart.
