With Impulse LP, Finetune, the electronic music project of Russian musician and media artist Mikhail Komisarov, presents a ten-track exploration of sound as a vehicle for emotional transformation. Released through Singeley Wax as the third instalment in the label’s Russian Series, the album occupies a space between experimental electronica, ambient composition and a more textural, cinematic approach to electronic music.
Komisarov, also known as Michael Dop and co-founder of Slowdance Records, approaches Finetune as a platform for sonic research rather than a project confined to a single genre. His palette brings together modular synthesis, acoustic instrumentation, field recordings and carefully constructed effect chains, allowing individual elements to interact in ways that favour atmosphere, detail and gradual transformation over conventional song structures.
Across Impulse LP, hypnotic synthesizer sequences and polyrhythmic arrangements provide the foundations for a sound world that feels constantly in motion. Rather than relying on obvious peaks or dramatic shifts, the music develops through subtle modulations, changes in density and the gradual emergence of new textures. Time becomes less a fixed framework than a malleable element, shaped by repetition, suspension and the listener’s own perception of movement.
The album’s experimental character is balanced by an underlying sensitivity to mood. Ambient passages and cinematic textures establish a sense of space, while the interplay between electronic and acoustic elements introduces a degree of unpredictability. The resulting compositions suggest environments that are simultaneously intimate and expansive, inviting close listening without demanding a single, definitive interpretation.
There is also a distinctive physical dimension to the record. Its polyrhythmic structures prevent the music from becoming entirely weightless, creating points of tension beneath its more atmospheric surfaces. These rhythmic details lend the material an internal pulse, allowing its quieter moments to retain a sense of direction even when conventional notions of progression begin to dissolve.
This balance between structure and openness is central to Finetune’s identity. The compositions are carefully assembled, yet their emotional impact emerges from the relationships between sounds rather than from a predetermined narrative. Modular synthesis becomes a means of exploring uncertainty, field recordings contribute a sense of lived environment, and acoustic elements introduce subtle variations in tone and character. Each component serves the wider composition without losing its individual presence.
The project’s multidisciplinary background further informs this approach. Komisarov’s work as a media artist places sound within a broader conversation about perception, technology and the ways sensory information can shape experience. On Impulse LP, this perspective finds an audible counterpart in music that privileges movement, shifting perspectives and the gradual reconfiguration of familiar sonic materials.
Issued as part of Singeley Wax’s Russian Series, the album also stands as a compelling statement of contemporary experimental electronic music, one that moves beyond the distinction between functional rhythm and abstract composition. Its ten tracks offer a listening experience built around nuance rather than immediacy, with the most significant developments often occurring at the margins of attention.
Impulse LP ultimately presents electronica as an open-ended process of discovery. Rather than prescribing an emotional response, Finetune creates the conditions for one to emerge, allowing rhythm, texture and silence to interact in a constantly evolving sonic environment. It is an album that rewards patience, revealing its character through the small shifts that gradually transform the whole.
