Daniel Knott, aka The Indiigo Child, isn’t afraid to show emotion in his music, with a house sound that mixes cinematic synths, deep grooves and soulful textures influenced by a multicultural upbringing and a family history rooted in performance, music, art and poetry. He has built up a diverse catalogue since debuting the project in 2018 with outings on Save My World, Alpha Good Girl, Techno Dream and Throttle Therapy, and now subtly evolves his style once more.
“If you live in the past, you’re going to be sad, and if you live too far in the future, you’re going to have anxiety.” That idea is central to this new EP, which was inspired by the last two years living in the Bay Area and the people, places and creatives found in Northern California, particularly Lake Merritt in Oakland where, says the artist, “weekend gatherings centred on art, food, music and community became a major source of inspiration. ‘Memories’ is a reminder that our experiences – whether beautiful or painful – can shape us without distracting us from the life directly in front of us.”
The immediately effective ‘Memories’ has a heart-tugging r&b sample that makes you pine for something you didn’t know you’d lost. It’s a swinging house groove with dry, dusty, and perfectly stripped-back drums, with an irresistible bump that never quits. Whether on a main stage or a smaller back room, it has all the ingredients to lock you in. The brilliant ‘East Bay’ has springy house drums and elastic bass with a more playful bounce and smudged vocals that amp up the vibes. It’s another restrained cut that packs a big punch both emotionally with the melancholic chords and physically with the clipped, punchy groove.
