Singer and songwriter Igor Tselyp has spoken about the key differences between the Ukrainian music scene and the international music industry, highlighting both the challenges faced by local artists and the unique advantages that shape Ukrainian music today.
Comparing the two models, Tselyp noted that the role of an artist within the Ukrainian music market is significantly broader than in most established international industries. While major global markets operate within clearly structured systems, many Ukrainian musicians are still required to build their careers largely on their own.
“In Ukraine, you’re not just a singer. You’re your own manager, promoter, and strategist at the same time,” singer said.
He explained that in many foreign markets the industry functions like a well-organized mechanism, with labels, professional teams, and long-term planning. In contrast, the Ukrainian music market often relies on flexibility, personal initiative, and constant adaptation to changing circumstances.
At the same time, Igor believes that this lack of rigid structure gives Ukrainian artists greater creative freedom. Decisions can be made faster, risks are taken more easily, and honest music has a real chance to reach listeners even without large budgets or major industry backing.
“The Ukrainian music market is very alive. If a song is real, it will find its listener even without a big system behind it,” the artist noted.
Another important difference, according to Tselyp, lies in the relationship between artists and their audiences. In Ukrainian music culture, this connection is often more personal and emotionally charged than in larger, more commercialized markets.
“In Ukraine, music is perceived as a conversation. Abroad, it’s often treated more as a product. That human connection is our strength,” Igor Tselyp said.
He concluded that this sincerity and closeness between artists and listeners are exactly what make Ukrainian musicians noticeable on the international stage, even in the absence of large-scale industry infrastructure.
